Sorting Collections

Children are natural collectors. Sorting and categorizing a favorite collection is a great learning activity and a lot of fun. (If your child doesn't already have a collection, encourage him or her to gather items while you are out and about in the world. Shells and rocks are durable collectables and can be rearranged and sorted in many different ways — by size, shape, color, and texture, just to name a few. If found collectables aren't an option, dried beans and seeds from the grocery store, building blocks, and other small toys work well too.)
Together, observe each item in the collection closely and encourage your child to describe its color, shape, pattern, and texture. Try categorizing by one characteristic; putting all the smooth shells together, regardless of color or size, or all the blue shells together, regardless of size or texture. You can sort small things in empty egg cartons or muffin tins. Bigger things can be sorted in larger containers, like shoeboxes. As an extension activity, you and your child can create a permanent display of the collection, making labels to describe the categories.

MATH WORKSHEETS

Here are some worksheets Nikki did a few nights ago. These are a bit easy for him, but I want him to be able to practice all the time so that later on, he will be able to count in his mind instead of verbally.

WORKBOOK

Another cutting and pasting activity. Nikki enjoys this a lot. =D

Another review for Nikki.

We took some time accomplishing this. I had to cut the red circles because Nikki complained his were ugly and it was pretty hard to do. So I obliged and he pasted them. In addition, I let him count Pooh's and Eeyore's fruits and compare. I let him use the <> sign so he could get used to using those symbols. =D

Last activity. While he was drawing the tomatoes Nikki said, "Mommy, my tomatoes look like hearts." =D So cute.

MATH

I bought this math workbook for Nikki. When I browsed through the pages, I thought that it was a bit easy for him. But then again, this will be a nice review for him since the later pages are challenging. This workbook cost only P65.00. =D

Nikki answered this so fast, I gave him 2 stickers. (He usually takes his sweet time when he answers his workbooks.)

Nikki did all right here as well. I was a bit apprehensive about the spelling and such but he already knows the right way to spell them all. =D

This was a bit tricky for Nikki because this was the first time he tackled division. But after the second set, he got it. We need to review this lesson again next time.

WORKBOOK

My sister bought this workbook for Nikki. Unfortunately, it is too simple for Nikki so I just used it as a reviewer for him. True enough, in only 2 nights, he finished answering the book. But he really enjoyed answering it. But he loved getting those gold stars most of all. He told me, "Mommy, they look like the stars in Mario Bros." Oh boy... =D

CLASSY BOARD GAME

I bought this game for Nikki and Ethan a few days ago. It's very similar to the snakes and ladders boardgame but this one is 3D. When the ball falls into a "ladder" it automatically rolls up. If it falls on a "slide", it rolls down. The boys love it especially since it has a Disney Cars motif. Nikki was a bit confused with the counting because not only did he have to remember the number on the dice, he also has to make sure he counts upward on the board (44, 45, 46...etc.). So this will really be a big help for Nikki in counting numbers. But not only that, this game will also teach him how to lose gracefully. Nikki hates to lose. He gets so affected when others win. So using this simple game, hopefully, Nikki will learn a bit of sportsmanship.

INTRODUCTION TO FRACTIONS

I love this block set of the boys. I can't recall when we bought it or if this was a present but I think it's a great learning tool. I'm still not pressuring Nikki to learn fractions (although I tried to show him those in his workbook and he stared at me blankly) but I'm exposing him to measuring cups, measuring spoons and the like just to expose him. But this toy is really great because he could SEE and TOUCH it so it will be better for him to understand fractions later on. Again, I'm not pressuring Nikki and Ethan to learn fractions right now, but at least with these kind of learning tools, it will not be hard for them to grasp that concept. =D

INTRODUCTION TO ORDINALS

I printed these worksheets from edhelper.com. I supposed that Nikki will have to tackle ordinals soon and I saw that this was the perfect introduction to that.
